Scholarship: Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals

OBAP has seven scholarships available through October 12, 2018. 

  • There is no limit on the number of scholarships that an applicant can apply for as long as the requirements of the scholarship are met. Each scholarship that an applicant applies for must have its own application and all required documentation submitted in one combined PDF file.
  • Attached the ONE COMBINED PDF, to an email. The subject line should be the name of your scholarship and your full name. ie, Subject line: Jeppessen/Malcolm Johnson. The body of the email must include your name, contact information and OBAP member number. You must be an active OBAP member at the time of submission.
  • The application must be typed, no exceptions. There are several free online services in addition to Acrobat Reader to consider for typing on a PDF. HERE IS ONE OPTION

United Airlines and OBAP Flight Operations Scholarship

United Airlines is proud to partner with the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals supporting the encouragement and advancement of minorities in all aviation and aerospace careers. As an industry leader passionate about diversity and inclusion, United Airlines’ mission is to create an inclusive work environment characterized by dignity and respect that empowers every employee to serve the global marketplace and contribute to company success. United Airlines would like to make a difference in the life of an aspiring airline pilot who is pursuing his or her dream in the world of aviation. Three $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to individuals who currently meet the following criteria: 

Must be a current full time Junior, Senior or Graduate student enrolled in an accredited collegiate aviation or aeronautical science program at application deadline. 

FAA Instrument rating required 

FAA Commercial Certificate preferred 

FAA Multi-Engine Rating preferred 

Minimum of a 3.0 GPA required 

This scholarship is intended for individuals seeking advancement in professional aviation development towards a career as a professional airline pilot. Funds will be used to advance flight training and will be paid directly to the institution or flight school. Training must be completed within one year. The recipient will be chosen on a basis of merit, career aspirations, and dedication, as well as contributions to their community and service with OBAP. 

Items that must be included with the application: 

Two letters of recommendation are required, one from a faculty member or flight instructor and one from a pilot who has flown with the candidate. 

Academic Transcripts 

Copies of pilot certificates 

Copies of medical certificate 

Essay describing career aspirations and goals, achievements/honors, aviation development to date, involvement with OBAP, volunteerism, leadership and planned use of scholarship funds. 

Prepared to share logbooks if selected for interview

United Airlines Tech Ops – Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) 

Scholarship award amount: 2 @ $1500.00 ea 

Open to OBAP members who are seeking a higher education degree in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering or Aircraft Maintenance. 

Participants must either be currently enrolled in an Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering or Aviation Maintenance program or accepted into an Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering or Aviation Maintenance program at an accredited University or College. 

Participants must currently have a GPA of 3.0 or equivalent at the time of application-either in High School or their current Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering or Aviation Maintenance program. 

In addition to academic transcripts, please submit a 500-1000 word essay-typed and double spaced-addressing the following topics: 

1. Who or what inspired you to pursue a degree/career in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering or Aircraft Maintenance. 

2. What do you consider to be your strongest characteristic and why. 

3. Why are you the most qualified candidate for the United Airlines Tech Ops Scholarship?

OBAP is dedicated to supporting increased interest and placement in aviation and aerospace careers.
